DESCRIPTION:2021 is just around the corner. As leadership teams turn to planning for the coming year\, this time the task is not a simple one. Where general parameters within which to lay plans are usually understood\, the current context contains layers upon layers of uncertainty. \nWill services be able to be delivered face to face? SUMMARY:Managing Contested VCAT Disputes
DESCRIPTION:Community Housing Organisations are reporting an increase in tenants being represented at VCAT and as a result\, complex and costly legal arguments and procedures are arising. \nThis 1.5 hour session\, led by Barrister Joel Silver and Lawyer Ellen Turner\, has been developed to help community housing workers understand the technical and substantive arguments often put forward by tenants’ legal representatives. \nIt will also help participants to manage cases that involve significant preparation\, lengthy hearings\, decisions about evidence and/or cross examination of witnesses. \nParticipants are encouraged to provide anonymous details of past situations where the tenant having legal representation so real-life situations can be workshopped in this interactive session. \nThe seminar is aimed at \n\nTenancy workers who are on the “front lines” and may be involved in the preparation of VCAT proceedings and/or attending as witnesses at VCAT.\nExperienced housing workers who will run the matter at VCAT.\nManagers who determine when legal action is appropriate to manage the tenancy dispute.

SUMMARY:Accurately identifying the person most in need of protection
DESCRIPTION:The 2017 Annual report of the Queensland Domestic and Family Violence Death Review and Advisory Board found that a high proportion of female victims\, and nearly all Aboriginal victims\, of domestic and family violence (DFV)-related deaths had been recorded by police as a perpetrator of DFV on at least one occasion. SUMMARY:The Care Economy and Why it’s Important to You
DESCRIPTION:Images of jobs and the economy are overwhelmed by pictures of hard hats\, half built bridges and tunnels\, and even freshly built submarines and naval vessels. Our imaginations are full of jobs “for the boys”. Yet the fastest growing part of the economy is the care economy that is dominated by women: jobs in health care and social assistance are now the largest industry segment\, by a long way. And they are tipped to grow just as rapidly in the years ahead. These jobs don’t just include work in hospitals and health care centres. They also involve work in disability\, aged care\, child care\, family services\, mental health services\, and so on. Critically\, they also involve the social housing sector. \nFor too long\, the care economy has been thought of as being about consumption and welfare; as a cost rather than an investment. Yet recent econometric research has shown that if governments want the best bang for their investment dollar\, they are better to grow the care economy than construction. \nThose participating in this seminar will: \n– develop a solid understanding of the care economy and why it is growing so fast \n– unravel the forces driving the care economy and see that these are locked in and global in their reach \n– explore the way that politicians and the media misrepresent the care economy in favour of traditional but declining industries like manufacturing \n– understand why the care economy is characterised by low wages and insecure\, part time jobs \n– appreciate that\, underpinning all this\, is a gendered division of labour and a reluctance by policy-makers to see work that is performed mainly by women as legitimate and productive that offers us great hope for the future \n– see that we are at an important policy cross road\, in which we could on the one hand develop an industry policy that has as its goal the development of a world class care economy that can be taken to the world or continue the current trend of rolling out managed markets in which social policy becomes a vehicle for private companies to profit at the expense of workers and service standards. \n– be able to champion the care economy using arguments and concepts that will deeply challenge those who insist wrongly on pursuing a vision of jobs for the boys. \nWho should attend: \n\nManagers and Directors interested in broader trends in the Australian welfare state and where social housing fits within them.\nThose aspiring to leadership positions will also find this session useful.\nFor Managers and Directors: you will be in a stronger position to think strategically about your organisation in terms of both longer term opportunities\, but also more immediate concerns around workforce recruitment\, retention and training. You will also discover a new argument to deploy in advocating for social housing as a sector right for investment.\nFor aspiring leaders: this training will give you the opportunity to reflect on important changes taking place within the welfare state that will impact on your future career. You will take away important understandings to help you and your organisation to navigate the challenging times ahead of us.

SUMMARY:Community Housing Aboriginal Cultural Safety Framework – Cultural Awareness Training
DESCRIPTION:Recently Ministers Wynne and Williams launched the Framework in a virtual member’s meeting where a number of CHO CEOs committed their organisations to work towards having a culturally safe service and workplace. You can view the videos of the CEOs committing to the framework\, an Aboriginal tenant and Aboriginal employee talking about the impact of dealing with a culturally-safe organisation\, and report consultant Jenny Samms talking about the next steps on the CHIA Vic website. \nHave Your Staff Undertaken Cultural Awareness Training? \nCHIA Vic has partnered with the Victorian Aboriginal Community Services Association (VACSAL) to deliver cultural awareness training in the context of the new Community Housing Aboriginal Cultural Safety Framework. \nThis course will give participants an increased understanding of the historical and cultural events that continue to impact on Aboriginal communities and individuals. It will examine the impact of racism and stereotyping and look at ways to break down barriers to working effectively with Aboriginal organisations and individuals. \nWhilst the training does not cover the implementation of the framework\, it will provide participants with a sound base to assist their organisation to begin the process of adopting the framework.

SUMMARY:Why so little social housing? The politics of Australian housing policy
DESCRIPTION:Terry Burke is Professor of Housing studies at Swinburne University. He is one of Australia’s most well-known academic researchers and conceived\, developed\, and taught Swinburne’s suite of social  housing management courses (Grad Cert\, Dip and Masters in Housing Management and Policy). He has served on many urban and housing advisory panels and committees for all levels of government and is currently on the board of the CHIA Vic. \nThis workshop provides an understanding of the question ‘Why can’t social housing get greater political traction in Australia?’ For almost three decades social housing has been in decline despite abundant evidence as to need and a mountain of policy ideas for a way forward. The workshop equips participants to understand: \n\nWhy\, despite substantial evidence of housing failure\, there is very little policy reform in Australia.\nWhy the few policy changes we have seen are a much part of the problem as a solution.\nWhat is it in the make of the Australian governance and housing systems social housing cannot get greater political take up?\nWhether the COVID19 crisis will make any real difference to the future of social housing and if so how?\n\nIt would be suitable for: \n\nManagement and team leaders\nStaff with responsibility for tenancy and property management\nAnybody interested in Australia’s current housing problems.

SUMMARY:Having money conversations with tenants
DESCRIPTION:Talking about money with tenants is a skill.   According to research\, 50% of adults believe that sharing personal money matters is taboo.  When you factor that statistic into the landlord/tenant relationship\, it is easy to see why it can be so difficult to encourage tenants to be honest about their finances.
