Right now in Australia, there’s just one job vacancy for every 13 people looking for work. This mismatch will get worse before it gets better, as the economic crisis sparked by COVID-19 takes hold.
With so many people out of work, we simply cannot return to the brutality of the old rate of Newstart (now rebranded JobSeeker), which saw people struggling to survive on $40 a day.
The old rate was so low it didn’t even cover the basics, such as housing, food, bills, and transport.
We need to Raise the Rate for Good so people can cover the basics and live with dignity.
