It might look like a small step to addressing homelessness in our regions, but hats off to the Mount Alexander Shire for making changes to local laws that will allow residents to camp or park a caravan or tiny home on wheels on certain properties without a permit.  Council voted unanimously in favour of dropping the need for a permit at its ordinary council meeting on June 20 following overwhelming public support for the move.

Although there are certain rules that need to be adhered to such as, the land must have an existing dwelling on it, this provides security to many, including women over 55 unable to secure private rental, purchase a property but perhaps a tiny home is within their reach. Families or even friends who have enough land to provide the space for a small dwelling can now do so without a permit is very much welcomed by many in the community.

What a fine example of how grass roots action can make a huge impact for many in our communities.
